Rationale

Addiction appears in the individual but begins in society

The Observatory does not isolate one form of addiction. It considers addiction as something a person does against their own will, regardless of frequency, quantity or effect.

The factors involved are multiple and must be explored with the person's permission, desire and participation.

The methodology connects the work of Bruce K. Alexander and Paulo Freire.

It is a term used for situations of dependence related to substance use. Each case needs to be understood in its own context.

The terms can be used in different ways. The Observatory prefers the term addictions to broaden the understanding of the phenomenon.

No. Using a substance does not, by itself, establish that an addiction is present.
